Park transformation is a giant piece of work
Published 25 May 2010
An eighteen month long project to transform a park in Peckham has been unveiled.
St. Mary Frobisher Park is now able to boast over £100,000 of council funded improvement works, including a large sculpture of a sleeping giant in the centre of the park.
Until recently the park had been overgrown and unwelcoming.
Now Southwark Council, with help from design firm Planet Earth Ltd, has opened up the park, offering local people enjoyment of a beautiful pocket of green space covered in sycamore trees.
Work done
- construction of several unique play opportunities including a large bespoke climbing frame, inclusive swing and other opportunities for creative and imaginary play within nature
- creation of the Peckham Giant and sculptural benches by artist Friedel Buecking
- creation of a blue river channel featuring mosaic artworks co-created by local children and community arts group Art4space
- building a space for growing herbs in raised planters.
Cllr Barrie Hargrove, Southwark Council cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling, said:
"This is a fantastic piece of work. Protecting and improving green space is one of the top environmental priorities of the new cabinet. This is going to provide an excellent space for local families to enjoy, where previously there wasn't very much for them."
