Parents urged to take up a helping hand in the borough
Published 1 April 2010
A new round of courses to help residents improve their parenting skills is on offer now in Southwark.
The 13 week Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities programme is aimed at parents who feel they need help in raising children, or parents who have been referred via the courts system.
The Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities programme provides parenting skills, such as how to improve communication with a child, how to discipline a child in a positive way and how to encourage a respectful environment at home, among others.
In most cases, the parents have to have a child or children that Southwark Council's children's services department is working with.
The first set of parent groups to take part in the Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities programme was in the spring and summer of 2000. Since then over 400 parents in Southwark have graduated from the programme.
The council runs groups in all areas of the borough, from Peckham to Dulwich to Rotherhithe, both during the day and evening courses.
