Olympic hopeful urges children to try out a new sport and get involved

Published Tuesday, 13 April 2010

Southwark youngsters who fancy trying out a new sport should head down to the Elephant and Castle this week for the annual Southwark community sports day.

And who better to show how it's done than Samson Oni, a Southwark Council sports coach and potential 2012 Olympic high jumper, who'll be on hand to offer advice and encouragement.

Children of all ages are being urged to make the most of Southwark Council's second community sports day on Friday 16 April which will give them a chance to try out sports from tennis to football to rugby.

Qualified coaches will be on hand to guide novices through the basics and offer help on the next steps in taking up the sport for good

Also on display will be the council's portable athletics track, for those who want to try their hand at running, jumping and throwing.

The event, which is being run in partnership with leisure provider Fusion, is expected to see around two hundred children taking part.

Gill Davies, head of environment and housing at Southwark Council, said: "This is our second year of hosting this event and it should be a great day. We're really lucky to have Samson Oni working for us and helping on the day, and hopefully his Olympic ambitions will inspire more children in Southwark to take up a new sport."
