Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Month 2011
Published 2 February 2011
LGBT History Month takes place every February, celebrating the lives and achievements of the LGBT community.
Southwark's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community is one of the largest in London at just under 20,000 residents. The borough is also home to some of the nation's most iconic LGBT and human rights activists, including Peter Tatchell and Sue Sanders (co-founder of LGBT History Month).
LGBT History Month has been marked across the United Kingdom since 2005. This year's special theme is "tackling homophobia and transphobia in sport".
Southwark's LGBT History Month 2011 will be launched on Tuesday 1 February 2011 at the council's Tooley Street offices, with a special Queer Question Time, hosted by Evan Davis of BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
In 2010 Southwark celebrated LGBT History Month with a centre-piece touring exhibition, Another Side of the Rainbow, profiling some members of the borough's LGBT community. This exhibition will again display during February 2011.
Examples of projects previously supported in Southwark and other London boroughs for LGBT History Month include film screenings, school workshops and assemblies, displays and exhibitions, public talks, LGBT themed quizzes, seminars, and book launches.
Check out the national LGBT History Month website for more information.
