Pupils, teachers and parents from Walworth celebrated the unveiling of high profile fencing at Townsend Primary School in East Walworth last Friday 19 March 2010.
Walworth Community Council funded the project with £17,000 from Southwark Council's Cleaner Greener Safer fund, to improve the entrance to the school by installing decorative fencing. Local artist Hannah Littlejones held workshops with Townsend School pupils to design the fence and create its decorative designs based around the theme of recycling.
Councillor Paul Kyriacou, executive member for environment at Southwark Council, said: "It very exciting to see how these talented pupils, with the help of Cleaner Greener Safer funds and local artist Hannah, have used their skills to improve their school entrance."
Councillor Lorraine Lauder MBE, chair of Walworth Community Council, said: "I am delighted that the Cleaner Greener Safer fund has provided such enjoyment to local schoolchildren, as well as inspiring them to make their school entrance look beautiful. I am very proud of them."
Anne Stonell, the Headteacher at Townsend Primary School, said: "This project has been outstanding because our pupils were able to work with local artists and companies to design a fence that has had a real impact on our community. Many parents, pupils and local residents have said that it makes our environment better".
