Rare Southwark artwork to go on display as part of 100 years of International Women’s Day

Published 23 March 2011

Southwark Council is to put on an exhibition, starting this Friday, which will mark the centenary of International Women’s Day.

Featuring work by artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas and Gillian Wearing, the exhibition delves into the archives of the council's art collection to unearth some gems by female artists.

Entitled 'Crossing Centuries: Works by women artists 1830-2000' the show will be on for nearly two months, starting this Friday 25 March.

Councillor Veronica Ward, cabinet member for culture, leisure, sport and the Olympics at Southwark Council, said:

"It's wonderful that we have such a collection, and can celebrate the centenary of Women's Day by exhibiting significant women painters like this. I'd really encourage as many people as possible to enjoy the show."

The free exhibition is part of the council's Celebrating Women 2011 programme, which is an extension of the widely celebrated International Women's Day. It will be held between 1.30pm to 5pm at the Artists Studio Company (ASC) Gallery, 128 Erlang House, Blackfriars Road, SE1 8EQ

Background Info:

Celebrating a century of International Women's Day, this exhibition highlights historic, modern and contemporary work by women artists in the Southwark Art Collection.

Through selected themes and genres, art by women working in the nineteenth century will be seen alongside works by some of today's most well-known female artists. Topographical studies of local Bankside and a selection of twentieth century prints in a range of media will illustrate different periods of collecting.

Featured artists include Margaret Sarah Carpenter, Prunella Clough, Tracey Emin, Anya Gallaccio, Grace Golden, Barbara Hepworth, Gertrude Hermes, Sarah Lucas, Bertha Newcombe and Gillian Wearing.

The exhibition is taking place in partnership with ASC Gallery.
