Peckham transport project earns Southwark Council a national award

Southwark Council has pocketed a national award for a scheme to make Rye Lane in Peckham more pedestrian and cycle friendly
The project won a British Parking Award in the APCOA Living Streets Award category.
The £650,000 transformation of the northern stretch of Rye Lane included shared space for pedestrians and cyclists, improved pedestrian crossings, and new road surfacing.
The road had long been a hotspot for illegal parking and an increasing number of collisions between cyclists and pedestrians. When extensive street repairs were needed on Rye Lane , the council seized the opportunity to use council and TfL money to completely redesign the street and improve facilities for shoppers, cyclists, bus passengers and local businesses.
Councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling at Southwark Council, said:
"I'm really glad that this scheme has won this award. Early indications show how successful it appears to be so far in reducing accidents and minimising bad parking, which was having an adverse affect on businesses there. Congratulations to the team."
Background information
While robust road accident analysis requires three years' data, early indications show that within the redesigned area, there have been no reported accidents and the number of tickets issued to cyclists has dropped by 70%. Traders welcome the new loading facilities and the number of penalty charge notices for parking and loading offences has dropped by 23% which has the effect of putting £36,720 into the local economy.
In July 201 the council completed, on budget and ahead of schedule, a set of major improvements to the northern section of Rye Lane . New road surfacing, a widened shared space with quality paving, two upgraded pedestrian crossings, and a new contra flow cycle track were some of the improvements for local shops and businesses, cyclists, shoppers and bus users.
