London Marathon 2010
Published 25 April 2010
Southwark Council is supporting the Help for Heroes charity and the London Marathon with a huge, post-event clean-up strategy.
The London Marathon takes place on Sunday, April 25th from 9am.
The marathon route through Southwark will be Surrey Quays Road, Salter Road, Brunel Road and Jamaica Road. The council will clean these roads plus the adjoining roads to these that have been contaminated with litter.
Approximately 50 council staff will be working on the marathon clean up from midday to 5pm.
We recycle anything and everything that can be recycled but the main bulk will be the plastic drinks bottles discarded by runners. Last year we collected 4.82 tonnes of recyclable material from the route.
Four Southwark residents have received allocated placements to run in the London Marathon. The marathon is open to runners from all over the world, from amatuer to professional levels.
Southwark Council wishes all participants best of luck for Sunday.
Visit the London Marathon website for specific event details or TFL for information on road closures and transport disruptions.
