A Southwark Council lollipop lady has been named as the country's best lollipop person in a national competition.

Pupils and staff at the Herne Hill school presented Pauline Martin with the Kwik Fit Insurance Lollipop of the year award at a special assembly this week.

Pauline, who's 67, had previously won the regional award for best lollipop person in London and has been active member of the school and devoted to the personal safety of the local school children.

Coaching the five aside football team for four years and campaigning for a new crossing to be installed on the busy King's College Road outside of the school are just a few of the things Pauline has done to support the school.

Nominated for the award by the school, Pauline was overwhelmed to hear that she had been picked as the UK's best lollipop person, she said: "I really am shocked to have won such a prestigious prize - I really didn't expect it. I absolutely love working at Herne Hill School - it's the happiest school I've worked at and that's down to the teachers, parents and the children - they are all wonderful."

Councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling at Southwark Council, said: "I am highly delighted that one of our school crossing attendants Pauline has picked up this very significant award."
