Popular Walworth lady marks hundredth birthday

Everyday Walworth pensioner Lylie Mercer makes the short walk from her Portland Street flat to East Street market to do her shopping.
Last Wednesday friends, relatives and neighbours gathered in the hall of Broadmayne House to mark the popular resident's birthday with food, drink and some classic sing-along tunes.
Among those to congratulate Lylie were her sister-in-law who had flown in from Canada, the Deputy Mayor Lorraine Lauder and sitting proudly on a table next to her was a card from the Queen.
Lylie, who was born on Brandon Street, a stones throw from her current block , said:
"I didn't know I was so popular - I've not even had a cup of tea today I've had so many phone calls.
"I make it my business to be out of the flat as long as I can. I go out everyday. The streets have changed so much over the years. But all the traders at the market know me. I like to talk to everyone. I'll go out even if I don't need to buy anything.
Councillor Lorraine Lauder, Deputy Mayor, added: "I hope when I'm 100, I'm 100 years young like Lylie. She's a fantastic lady - everyone in East Street knows her. She goes out every day. She even buys the papers for the other old people."
