Extreme weather updates
Published 23 December 2010
With the exception of the fortnightly garden waste scheme, a full scheduled refuse and recycling collection service is now operating.
In addition, we are working hard to catch up on any collections missed due to the weather as soon as possible.
The council has been out gritting the roads across the borough and will continue to do so into next week.
During the current weather conditions we urge residents to look out for themselves and neighbours and help where possible, with advice available on the Directgov website. Residents are also able to get help from our 24 hour call centre, by phoning 020 7525 5000.
Weather forecast
It's expected to be very cold with icy conditions and the possibility of some slight scattered snow showers.
Vulnerable residents
If there is snow and ice older and vulnerable residents are advised not to go out unless it is necessary. We will continue to visit vulnerable residents.
Gritting
The council is continuing to prioritise the road network, focusing on priority and emergency routes, for which we have sufficient supplies.
Current levels of grit means that we will:
- Be continuing to grit main priority roads to keep traffic moving and facilitate access to essential services
- Use grit stocks on estates to keep identified priority areas clear such as ramps and access to essential services such as health facilities
However, we will not:
- Be gritting footpaths, until our stock levels have increased
To see in more detail which roads are gritted in your area please visit the winter gritting page and map.
Note on grit stocks
We have been very prudent and careful with our salt stocks but we have had our supply of grit severely restricted by the supplier because of the national situation. With current low stocks of grit we are being forced to reduce operations, leaving most footpaths ungritted.
