New look sports hall for borough’s young people

As part of the council’s continuing drive to provide young people in the borough with top-notch facilities, this week sees the launch of a new sports hall at the Damilola Taylor Centre (DTC) in Peckham.
The centre, which opened in 2002, is one of thirty youth clubs in Southwark. More than five hundred and fifty people use the DTC facilities each week, and hundreds use the main hall for team sports including badminton, 5-a-side football, basketball, and netball.
In 2008 and 2009, the centre was awarded grants from Southwark Council's children's services department and the Cleaner Greener Safer fund, totalling £101,474, to refurbish the sports hall.
With that now complete, the new sports hall will be unveiled on Wednesday 8 December.
The event will begin at 6.45pm directly after the youth football sessions. There will be speeches, ribbon cutting and photographs. Refreshments will be served from 7.15pm on the mezzanine floor.
Speaking ahead of the launch, Catherine McDonald, Southwark Council cabinet member for children's services said: "The borough's young people deserve the best quality facilities. The Damilola Taylor Centre now has a hall to match not only the quality activities it provides but also the enthusiasm of the young people that regularly attend the centre".
