Democracy Commission publishes residents' feedback
Published 6 August 2010
The council's latest democracy taskforce session, has heard that residents want to overhaul the current set-up for council assembly meetings.
The overwhelming conclusion, from questionnaire responses and a resident's panel that attended the July council assembly, was that the current arrangement of Wednesday evening meetings at the town hall had to change.
In response to the questions "what do you think should be changed?" and "what could be done differently?" one resident suggested "online electronic voting to get electorates views on any issue".
The full transcript of the focus group meeting is available online.
The cross-party taskforce was launched in June in a bid to re-engage residents in council decision making. Its first job is to look at council assembly.
Over the last month the commission has collected the views of residents, councillors and expert witnesses. On 4 September the commission is holding a conference and it is calling on residents to come along.
Residents can fill in a questionnaire or email democracy@southwark.gov.uk to take part in the conference.
The team would like to know
- Do you think the town hall is the right venue for council assembly?
- Can you suggest new ways for the public to get involved at council assembly?
