Camberwell Leisure Centre facelift extended
Published 6 August 2010
Southwark Council's refurbishment of Camberwell leisure centre is now being extended after the authority has secured additional funding.
The £200,000 capital injection will include an upgrade of the dry side changing rooms, re-tiling of the existing pool tank and surrounding walkways and expansion of the existing gym area.
On 31 March 2009 Southwark Council was awarded funding of £1.45 million to go towards improving the centre. The funding, together with over £2.5m from Southwark's Investing in Leisure programme will be used to renovate the centre and provide residents with a top notch facility.
The additional building works will be undertaken during the existing build, while the premises is unoccupied and the builders are on site. This will minimise disruption and ensure the council can make cost savings.
As a result of the enhancements the opening date will now be February 2011.
Councillor Veronica Ward, Cabinet member for culture, leisure, sport and the Olympics said: "The council's aim is to provide residents with the first class facilities and the additional funds will mean the added improvements will go a long way to enhance the centre. With the Olympics just two years away, it is my commitment to the borough that we work to ensure all residents have access to the best possible provision."
