Grants for LGBT History Month on offer
Published 24 November 2010
Southwark Council is giving local groups and individuals the chance to apply for funding to run an event or a project during Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) History Month.
Residents can apply for an amount from £250 to £1,000 and activities must take place in Southwark from 1 to 28 February 2011. They will be funded jointly by Southwark Council and the Southwark LGBT Network.
For more details and to submit aproposal go to the LGBT history moneth grant web page. The closing date is Friday 10 December 2010, at 5pm.
LGBT History Month takes place every February, celebrating the lives and achievements of the LGBT community with the aim, say organisers, of "claiming our history, celebrating our present, creating our future".
The month has been marked across the United Kingdom since 2005. This year's special theme is "tackling homophobia and transphobia in sport".
Southwark's LGBT History Month 2011 will be launched on Tuesday 1 February 2011 at the council's Tooley Street offices, with a special Queer Question Time, hosted by Evan Davis of BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
Councillor Abdul Mohamed, cabinet member for community engagement and equalities, said: "I am delighted that Southwark is once again backing LGBT History Month. The LGBT community make so many positive contributions to life in Southwark.
"I'm conscious that it's short notice and the window for applications is small - but I really hope lots of groups will come forward with great ideas."
Examples of projects previously supported in Southwark and other London boroughs for LGBT History Month include film screenings, school workshops and assemblies, displays and exhibitions, public talks, LGBT themed quizzes, seminars, and book launches.
Southwark's LGBT community is one of the largest in London at just under 20,000 residents. The borough is also home to some of the nation's most iconic LGBT and human rights activists, including Peter Tatchell and Sue Sanders (co-founder of LGBT History Month).
In 2010 Southwark celebrated LGBT History Month with a touring exhibition, Another Side of the Rainbow, profiling some members of the borough's LGBT community. This exhibition will again be on display during February 2011.
