Southwark prepares for winter chills with new gritting vehicles and salt giveaway

Published Wednesday, 27 November 2013

Winter salt

With the temperatures dropping and the frost slowly settling in, residents can seek warmth in the knowledge that Southwark Council is prepared for this winter’s challenges.

Whilst the council's highways team will be out in full force gritting the borough's busiest roads, the council is offering local residents a chance to keep their own pathways and footpaths safe with a free 5kg bag of salt.

Residents are welcome to collect a bag for an elderly neighbour or those unable to salt their own pavement to reduce the risk of ice.

Two giveaway sessions are planned for Saturday 30 November and Saturday 7 December 2013 at various locations across the borough including Lordship Lane in Dulwich, Walworth Road and Tower Bridge Road.

Officers will also be armed with top tips on how to make to make the most of the salt this winter.

In other winter measures, our highway maintenance contractor is now equipped with brand new gritting vehicles to combat the icy weather .

The new fleet comes fully equipped with state-of-the-art systems to keep road users safe. Conway Aecom, the council's highways contractor, have recently completed a programme of improvements to all their vehicles which includes sensory equipment to alert drivers to nearby objects, blind spot cameras and audible 'vehicle turning left' warnings.

Councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling, said: "Over the coming months, officers will be out with the new vehicles gritting Southwark's busiest roads. But we can't get to every street or pavement and so we hope residents will show real community spirit by claiming their free bag of salt, and helping all local people get on with their day-to-day lives, whatever the weather."

The new gritters and the salt giveaway forms part of the council's Winter Service Plan 2013 which sets out how we plan to deal with severe winter conditions.

The plan was updated at the end of the last season to list all the newly installed grit bin and the additional roads that will be gritted whenever ice is forecast.
