Last chance to have your say on a new leisure facility for Elephant and Castle

Published 5 October 2010

There is still time for residents to have their say on a new leisure facility for Elephant Castle.

The consultation on what possible leisure facilities should be included in the site is due to close on Friday 8 October and more than 1,200 people have already responded to a questionnaire.

The original closing date of 17 September was extended to due popular demand.

Take part in the online survey.

The responses will be analysed and will form part of the report to the council's cabinet in November when a decision will be taken on the next steps for developing the new facility. Feedback will be sent to everyone that has taken part.

On July 7 Southwark Council's cabinet agreed to enter into a regeneration agreement with Lend Lease paving the way for a £1.5bn transformation of the area. At the meeting the administration also agreed to improve leisure facilities at the Elephant and Castle.

After considering alternative sites within the Elephant and Castle the cabinet approved the recommendation to redevelop and improve facilities on the current Elephant and Castle leisure site.

As part of the consultation a public event was held at the current centre in September where concepts for internal layouts will be displayed until the end of October.

Meanwhile the team behind the consultation have been visiting community groups, school and colleges. Information is also available at local libraries.

Councillor Fiona Colley, Southwark Council cabinet member for regeneration said:

"I would urge anyone that cares about the future of Elephant and Castle to get involved in the consultation. We've already had a great response - but if you haven't been in touch there are still a few days to go.

"We want everyone in Southwark to have great leisure facilities and we want to make sure we provide the facilities local people want to use.

"To do that we need residents to let us know how they would like to spend their time in the centre.

"My message to residents is: 'This is your Elephant and Castle leisure facility and you have the opportunity to make a difference to its future, so please get involved and voice your opinion today'.

"We want residents to tell us what features would persuade them to visit."
