Green Chain Walk launches new Southwark extension

An historic Green Chain event took place on Sunday 26 September to mark the linking of Southwark’s green spaces to a London wide network.

The Green Chain, which started back in 1977, was set up to protect green spaces from development, and promote the enjoyment of the outdoors. It now boasts an area seven times as large as the city of London, and stretches from Crystal Palace across to Erith and from Chislehurst up to Woolwich.

Now, thanks to the long-awaited Southwark extension, it links to some exceptional green spaces in Southwark including Sydenham Hill Woods and Dulwich Park, as well as the Horniman Gardens in Lewisham and Crystal Palace Park in Bromley.

A special event on Sunday saw the Southwark extension officially open.

The event was in association with Transport for London's and Walk London's "Autumn Ambles" week-end, supporting ITV's national campaign to promote walking for health called "Walk4Life".

Councillor Veronica Ward, cabinet member for culture, leisure, sport and the Olympics at Southwark Council, said: "The Green Chain is great way to discover the open spaces that are available on our doorstep here in South East London.

"I'm thrilled that the long-awaited extension into Southwark is now here for everyone to enjoy, and I hope those that enjoyed the day on Sunday inspire more people to put on their boots and get walking."

Cllr Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling at Southwark Council, said: "This is quite a momentous day for the borough, as this extension has been a long time coming.

"We've got really special open spaces in Southwark and this is a wonderful way for walkers, not just locals but from all over London, to get to know them."
