Southwark Council opens £2.68million fund for local people to improve their area

14 September 2018

Southwark Council is inviting individuals and community groups to suggest how they would use £2.68million to improve their local area.

Local people have until 22 October to apply for council funding to bring about the changes that are important to them. Successful proposals will be announced at the council’s Community Council meetings, in early 2019.

People who are passionate about transforming unused and unloved spaces, or making their bit of Southwark safer, can apply to the Cleaner Greener Safer fund. The fund also includes dedicated cash for local road and highway improvements that you would like to see.

Earlier this summer, Bermondsey Artists' Group, based at Gallery by the Pool in Southwark Park, opened the Bothy Project (artist Bobby Niven) to create a new outdoor classroom in their renovated outdoor space, the bothy was part funded with a CGS grant of £14,300.

Air pollution and its affect on children’s health and development is a real concern for Londoners and the CGS programme welcomes ideas for mitigating the impact of air pollution. Last year the CGS fund helped provide living green screens to trap particulates and provide privacy at the Harris Academy Primary School. The fund also assisted with the provision of air purification units and house plants for classrooms and playground planting.  The highways funding could help deliver some new traffic calming or perhaps a school street in your area.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Cabinet Member for environment, transport management and air quality, said: “The Cleaner Greener Safer fund has brought huge benefits to local communities across Southwark. It brings people together and helps them to make local spaces friendlier, safer and more beautiful. I encourage others to consider what changes they’d like to see happen in their neighbourhoods and apply as well.”
