Council seeks cultural project for Sir Michael Caine’s old school in Camberwell

Southwark Council is looking for a cultural, creative and educational project to make its new home in Sir Michael Caine’s old school in Camberwell.

As part of its plans for a new Creative Enterprise Zone from Camberwell to Peckham, the council is inviting proposals to turn the old school building on Wilson Road, opposite the Camberwell College of Arts and by St. Giles Church, into a creative and cultural hub for a five-year period.

The two-storey building, a former science and technology centre from the 1960s, used to be home to the Wilson’s Boys Grammar School, which local boy Sir Michael Caine once attended.  Until recently it has been used for back-office and storage space but the council is now inviting proposals that make temporary use of the building to deliver a range of cultural and creative uses that could engage with local communities, while it considers the long term future of the site.

Cllr Peter John, Leader of the Council, said: “As home to the famous Arts College and our new Creative Enterprise Zone, Camberwell is set to become another cultural epicentre for South London. We have this fantastic opportunity to make temporary use of this space, right next to the college, to help support the creative corridor between Camberwell and its equally cultural neighbours in Peckham.”
