The future is bright for new Bellenden Primary School

Bellenden Primary School has undergone a complete rebuild and offers students an exciting new environment in which to learn and grow.

Bellenden has doubled its pupil capacity; the school has become two form entry as well as now offering a 26 place nursery.  Thanks to the new build the school has seen the addition of a new music room, hall and kitchen.

Engaging learning spaces are central to the interior design of the school. While bold colours feature prominently on the exterior of the building; the interior of the school is light, airy and spacious and punctuated with fresh citrus colours.

Teaching space is no longer confined to within the four walls of the classroom thanks to the addition of two outdoor-learning terraces on the first floor of the school.

Outdoor play space is encircled by the newly constructed buildings that make up the development on Dewar Street, protecting it from traffic and pollution.

Bellenden pupils will be able to enjoy a new multi-use games area and an outdoor music courtyard in their new school, with dedicated outdoor space for nursery, reception and year 1 classes. There is also a stage area with amphitheatre style steps as well as the addition of Bellenden’s very own maze.

The show-stopping exterior of the school is a fun and playful design that combines bright primary coloured polycarbonate panels and patterned relief brickwork that is still sympathetic to the surrounding area.

The inclusion of a lift means that all areas of the school are fully accessible.

Cllr Victoria Mills, Cabinet Member for Children and Schools said:  “Firstly, this must surely be one of the most colourful schools in London! It’s a really striking and wonderful piece of design. As a council, we are incredibly proud of all our primary school expansion projects and how each school community has made sure their new buildings serve their pupils’ needs. The new Bellenden Primary School really delivers a unique learning environment for the children of Peckham and I cannot wait to see what the school achieves.”

Gregory Doey, Executive Headteacher for Pilgrims’ Way and Bellenden Primary Schools said: “The whole school community is hugely excited to move into their new school. It is fantastic to have a brand new site that reflects the high quality of teaching at the school. The quality of the finish is beyond anything I ever expected. The school looks hugely impressive and I know I speak for everyone connected to Bellenden when I say how hugely grateful we are and how much we are looking forward to getting the most out of our fantastic new site.”
