Southwark scoops best local authority for highways and transport

29 November 2017

Southwark Council was awarded the coveted title of most improved local authority in the country for tackling traffic congestion at the National Highways and Transportation (NHT) Awards, on 23 November.

Southwark also achieved best in country in nine of the 26 categories, and best improved in a further seven, equalling or bettering all of its 2016 results.

The NHT carry out a national survey working with MORI, who put questions relating to public satisfaction with a range of highways and transport services.

This year, 112 highway authorities took part, including many of the larger metropolitan boroughs.

Southwark is the best performing council nationally, in the following categories:

  • Accessibility satisfaction
  • Walking/cycling pavements/footpaths
  • Traffic management
  • Highways maintenance
  • Highway enforcement/obstructions

Councillor Ian Wingfield, cabinet member for environment and public realm, said: “This award is an endorsement of all the work we have been doing with tenants, residents, businesses and other interest groups such as Southwark Cyclists, Living Streets and disabled access groups. We work hard to meet and engage with people about highway works and consider all public comments.

“We are very proud of this important national award, it will serve to spur us on and continue to listen and work with local people, in our efforts to reduce traffic disruption”.
