Southwark Council supports switch to electric vehicles

8 November 2017

Southwark Council is inviting residents to apply for electric car charging points. The chargers will be fitted to kerbside lamp posts adjacent to on street parking.

London suffers from extremely poor air quality and tailpipe emissions from diesel and petrol vehicles account for a significant proportion of these emissions.

Southwark residents showed a strong interest in switching from heavily polluting cars to electric and other low emission vehicles, during the council’s Kerbside Strategy. Many people have also contacted the council, asking for on-street charging points.

The council supports a move towards greener vehicles and recently secured £300,000 from a Go Ultra Low City Scheme managed by London Councils, Mayor of London and Transport for London. The funding supports innovative new approaches, such as using lamp posts as the base and power supply for charge points.

To help residents overcome some of the barriers to purchasing electric vehicles, the council is now inviting them to identify sites where charging points would support their switch to using greener vehicles. The council is interested to hear from residents who own or are considering purchasing an electric vehicle and who would like to trial this technology.

Cllr Ian Wingfield, cabinet member for environment and the public realm, said: “London's air quality is a public health crisis. The council is committed to working through our own policy, and together with other boroughs and the Mayor, to become part of the solution to combatting poor air quality.”
