Council transforms Aylesbury MUGA with a little help

The council, a developer, some artists and some local children, have transformed the Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) on Portland Street in the Aylesbury estate.

The council’s Cleaner, Greener, Safer programme awarded £9,000 to the project and worked with the Notting Hill Housing Trust, who kindly contributed an additional £5,000, and a helping hand.

The MUGA was looking pretty sorry for itself when the team stepped in, the ground was slippy and the walls were a mess. So they started by resurfacing the pitch with an anti-slip coating and painting on the sports markings. Then they fixed the fencing and sorted out the walls.

Next came the creative phase, which they scheduled to fall during half-term, so local children could get involved. Artists, Positive Arts, worked with the community and painted a mural on the internal walls, with a good number of children from the estate, who turned up to help.

Before the work started, the council’s team asked the children about the tags spray painted onto the walls of the MUGA. The children explained they were in dedication to their friend, a local child who had recently, tragically died from an illness. In order to allow them a dedication to their friend, the artists incorporated a globe design on the centre circle of the pitch.

Cllr Barrie Hargrove, Cabinet Member for Communities, Leisure and Safety, said: “I was touched to learn of the children’s tribute to their friend and of their contribution to this lovely project, the games area now looks incredible and the anti-slip coating makes it much safer too. This is another fine example of the excellent work of our Cleaner Greener Safer programme.”
