Southwark teams up with Clarion Housing Group to deliver over 280 new homes at council rents

Southwark Council has announced a new partnership with housing association Clarion Housing Group to build over 600 new homes in the borough – nearly half of which will be let at council rents.

The new partnership has been forged through the council’s pioneering Regeneration in Partnership Programme, which aims to provide new homes, improved public facilities and employment opportunities for local people through development partnerships.

Clarion will be building 606 new homes on sites identified by the council in the centre and south of the borough. At least 284 of the new homes will be council owned, and a further 94 will be homes available for low cost ownership, with the remainder as private home sales to pay for the building of the council homes.

Cllr Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “In Southwark we are tackling the housing crisis head on with our ambitious commitment to building 11,000 new council homes across the borough by 2043, so far we’ve completed 350 new council homes with well over 1,000 more on the way.

“Some of these homes we are delivering and funding ourselves but to meet such an ambitious target we are also looking at different ways we can work with development partners to deliver new homes on pockets of council-owned land. I am pleased to welcome Clarion Housing Group to our programme and look forward to working with them to build new, top quality and genuinely affordable homes for our residents.”

Kerry O'Driscoll, Director of Major Projects and Partnerships at Clarion, said: “We wanted to build on our existing legacy of investing in new homes and communities in Southwark.  With over one hundred years experience here we feel ideally placed to deliver a range of new homes, with quality and design at their heart, that local people can feel proud of and benefit from.”
