Southwark glitters in British Book Awards alongside big names Waterstones and J K Rowling

Southwark Council’s Camberwell Library has scooped The Bookseller’s Library of the Year Award at the British Book awards, aka The Nibbies.

The British Book Awards is the definitive event for honouring the commercial successes of publishers, authors and bookshops. It succeeds 2016’s British Book Industry Awards.

The idea behind the books of the year is to celebrate ‘the whole journey from the author’s mind to the reader’s hand, and showcase the range and depth of modern publishing.’ The original Nibbies was launched in 1990 by Fred Newman, founder and editor of Publishing News. The Bookseller acquired the Nibbies and it now organises the annual awards.

Categories for all types of booksellers and publishers were included, which saw Book Retailer of the Year going to Waterstones and J K Rowling being awarded The BA Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Book Trade.

The title of Library of the Year, sponsored by The Reading Agency, went to Camberwell Library in recognition of its achievements to double the number of issues and new borrowers in 2016 - its first full year of operation. The library was praised for using imaginative promotions including ‘Choose a Book for Camberwell Library’.

Councillor Johnson Situ, cabinet member for culture and social regeneration, said: “Libraries and small businesses are really important to Southwark’s communities so I am delighted that Camberwell has received this award.”

Winners were announced at an awards ceremony this week.
