Step Up to Social Work and be the difference in the heart of London

29 March 2017

A great opportunity has opened up for residents looking to make the move into a rewarding career in social work.

The South East London Teaching Partnership (Southwark, Greenwich and Lewisham councils and Goldsmiths, University of London) has signed up to a national scheme run by the Department for Education, which pays all course fees and a bursary to successful candidates signing up to an intensive 14 month course.

For anyone who thinks this might be for them, more details are available below:

Social work is a challenging but rewarding career through which you can make a real difference for children and families. You will need to build relationships with families facing difficult times, show a lot of patience and be a good listener.  You’ll also need good observational skills, analytical thinking and sound judgement to make the right decisions and protect children.  Social work regularly tests resilience, stamina and resolve - all of which you will need to succeed. But social work can be life changing for those you support and help.

The South East London Teaching Partnership is an exciting new social work education and training initiative funded by the government to bring innovation and improvement to social work practice in our area. The Partnership supports social workers at every stage in their career to be able to practice at the cutting edge whist continuing to develop personally and professionally. Goldsmiths, University of London offers an exciting learning curriculum based on core social work values and commitment to equality, and as employers Lewisham, Southwark and the Royal Borough of Greenwich provide exceptional practice placements, mentoring and guidance for learners.

Through our successful Step Up to Social Work training programme you will get intensive, hands-on experience of working in a social work role. On completion, you will obtain a Post Graduate Diploma in Social Work and you will be eligible to register and practice as a social worker. There is also the option to ‘top up’ to a MA Social Work award at a later stage. Those trainees who are successfully recruited to this 14-month, employment-based route into children and families social work will have their course fees paid and receive a bursary for the duration of the course.
