Southwark and Lambeth’s Southern Exposure Film Fund launch

30 June 2017

Budding filmmakers from Southwark and Lambeth are invited to come along to watch some of the latest films, and fire questions at the filmmakers and the people leading the prized training.

This year, up to four projects from ambitious filmmakers living in the two boroughs will be awarded grants from a pot of £10,000. All filmmakers are offered tailor-made support in the key areas of development, production, post-production and marketing/distribution.

Shola Amoo, SEFF filmmaker, said: “Southern Exposure gave me additional funding to shoot my short film Reparations For The Soul.  This film got me my place at The National Film and Television School.  This enabled me to shoot more films, intern at Channel 4, receive an MA and have access to key contacts, giving me the best preparation for a career in Film and TV.”

Southern Exposure is a unique grassroots professional development scheme for filmmakers living in South London. It is funded by Southwark and Lambeth Councils and match-funded by Creative Skillset, the British Film Institute, and Film London. Southern Exposure has been running on an annual basis for nine years and has produced over 45 films - from documentaries and thrillers to romantic comedies and animated music videos – including many award-winners.

Brek Taylor, executive producer from Tailormade Productions, will be working with the successful candidates. Brek will be available at the launch, to talk applicants through their ideas and expand on the process.

Previous films have gone on to screen at prestigious international festivals such as Cannes, Edinburgh, Rhode Island, London, SXSW, and Palm Springs Film Festivals and in cinemas across the UK.

Councillor Johnson Situ, Southwark Council cabinet member for Business, Culture and Social Regeneration, said: “This is a fabulous opportunity for local filmmakers to develop their talent, advance their experience and learn practical skills. Combined with enthusiasm and tenacity, this amazing opportunity will enhance the chances of getting work in the industry for the winning candidates. I especially hope to see lots of young people coming forward this year and extend the warmest welcome to all aspiring filmmakers in Southwark and Lambeth, come along to the launch and find out more.”

Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of Film London and the British Film Commission, said: “Southern Exposure offers an exciting opportunity for new and emerging filmmakers to really make their mark, as demonstrated by successes like The Beachcombers, Assessment and Darklight. This is incredibly important for our city and for our industry, and I cannot wait to be startled, challenged and excited by the applications we receive and the films we ultimately make.”

Cllr Sonia Winifred, Lambeth Council cabinet member for equalities and culture, said: “This is a great initiative to help develop the next generation of British filmmakers.

“It is an industry that is thriving in the capital, with some of the world’s best films being made by Londoners, the Southern Exposure Film Fund is a great opportunity for filmmakers in Lambeth and Southwark to build on their talents and aspire to greatness.”

Southwark and Lambeth based filmmakers wanting to apply have until 12pm on Tuesday 25 July to submit their applications, and can find out more online
