A further 201 brand new council homes in Southwark have secured funding after the council was awarded just over £12m for affordable homes from City Hall.

In November last year the Mayor of London launched his Affordable Homes programme 2016-21, which sets out Sadiq Khan’s funding priorities of affordable housing and the procedure for bidding for funds.

Southwark Council put in a bid for some of the funding towards its 11,000 new homes programme, the largest council home programme in London, and heard today it was one of the successful bidders.

Cllr Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “This is fantastic news and a welcome addition to our overall funding for our 11,000 new council homes programme, helping us deliver top quality, and genuinely affordable homes for residents in our borough.”

The funding will go towards new council rent homes on nine already identified sites around the borough in Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Peckham, East Dulwich and Camberwell.

In addition to the £12m of funding under this programme, Southwark Council also has £50m GLA funding under the Housing Zones programme including 563 affordable homes in the Old Kent Road Housing Zone and 525 affordable homes at the Canada Water Housing Zone.
