Council funded Healthwatch Southwark and its equivalent in Lambeth won an award at the national Healthwatch Network Awards on 6 July.

They were recognised for their work over the last 12 months, helping to improve the experiences of local NHS patients and social care users in Southwark and Lambeth.

Healthwatch Southwark and Lambeth won the Local Healthwatch Working Together category, coming out top for their work improving people’s experiences when they leave hospital.

For their project, Going Home, the two Healthwatch teams tracked people for up to three months after they were discharged, to see if they were getting the care and attention they needed. They shared what they learnt with Clinical Commissioning Groups and have been asked to keep making recommendations, based on continued work with people who have gone home after a hospital visit.

Healthwatch Southwark was also highly commended for its work creating volunteering opportunities for young people, including the chance to speak up about mental health and sexual health support.

Building on these successes, Healthwatch Southwark and Healthwatch Lambeth are now working with King’s Hospital. They are adapting the Going Home project to help staff at King’s understand older people’s experiences, from visiting the A&E department to returning home.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark Council Cabinet Member for Public Health said: “I am delighted to hear that Healthwatch Southwark’s excellent work improving the experience of our most vulnerable residents, during the difficult transition from hospital to home, has been recognised with a well earned and prestigious national award.”
