Pass rate continues to improve as Southwark students collect first ever numerical GCSE grades

Pupils from schools across Southwark have collected their GSCE exam results and this year’s crop of Year 11 pupils are the first to receive a numerical grade in some subjects.

As part of an ongoing shake up to the exam system, current Year 11 pupils will be the first to receive numerical grades in their English language, English literature and mathematics GCSEs.

Eventually all GCSEs taken in England will receive numerical grades.

Grade 9 is a new grade that has been created to recognise the achievements of the very highest performing students, with grade 4 the numerical equivalent of the outgoing C grade.

Initial results from over half of secondary schools show that 71.8 per cent of Southwark children achieved 9-4 grades for English literature, English language and mathematics. This is 2.5 percentage points above the 2016 pass rate of 69.8 per cent.

These latest provisional results continue a five-year long improvement trend in GCSE attainment in Southwark.

Early indications suggest results for the English Baccalaureate have improved by 2.1 percentage points. This year, attainment has increased to 37.9 per cent compared to 35.8 per cent in 2016.

Cllr Victoria Mills, Cabinet Member for Children and Schools, said: “On behalf of Southwark Council I want to congratulate all the young people who have collected their results today. These results are thanks not just to the hard work of the students, but also the commitment and support from parents and teachers. I want to wish them every success for the future.

“Changes to the examination system can be challenging to manage, but as these results show, Southwark students and teachers have delivered yet again.”
