New home for Peckham Portraits

We are delighted to announce that we have new homes for nine of our inspirational ‘Peckham Portraits’. Space has been created at Peckhamplex and the pictures will be relaunched during Peckham Festival on 14 September.

The portraits were part of an outdoor photography exhibition called ‘Underexposed’, from artist Franklyn Rodgers. They were delivered as part of the 2006/7, 4 The Record initiative. The collection aimed to raise the profile and celebrate the immense talent and achievements of Black British actors.

The photographs became part of the fabric of the local community, while displayed on the hoardings at Eagle Wharf – where local people fondly re-named them the Peckham Portraits. The council has been looking for a new home in a public space in Peckham, since they were taken into storage due to building work on Mountview Academy, at the site.

The portraits, which have been professionally cleaned, restored and reframed, will be attached to the alcoves at the front of Peckhamplex. We hope to rehome the rest of the portraits in the area in the new year.

Cllr Johnson Situ, Cabinet Member for business, culture and social regeneration, said: “These treasured and inspirational portraits are important to us and the people of Peckham. I am very pleased that we will be able to bring a number of them home this September.”
