‘Marden Codgers’ utilise recycled materials to give new lease of life to community space

Local residents celebrate the opening of a new communal green space, partly funded by Veolia and Southwark Council.

On the 21 August the Marden Square Sheltered Housing TRA, also known as the ‘Marden Codgers’, held a gathering of residents and funders to celebrate the completion of the works.

The once barren planters, donated to Marden Square last year, became the focus for a transformation project making use of recycled materials to develop the community space. The ‘Codgers’ successfully secured funding from Southwark’s Cleaner Greener Safer grant and Veolia’s Recycling Fund for Communities to transform the communal areas into a green space for over 180 households to enjoy. The recycling of recourses has been very important to the group, for example, the hanging baskets were made from reclaimed metal and concrete from a nearby construction site. Even the 700kgs of compost donated by Veolia is recycled from food and garden waste the company collects as part of its waste collections services.

Cllr Barrie Hargrove, Cabinet Member for Communities, Leisure and Safety, said: “We are delighted to help Marden Square Sheltered Housing with this creative and ecologically sound project. Our Cleaner Greener Safer funding has helped revive seven weed-infested planters, turning them into a beautiful array of fresh flowers and plants. This has brought the residents of Marden Square Sheltered Housing unit a lovely new view and space to relax in.”
