Trees in conservation areas

How can I find out if a tree or my home is within a conservation area?

For a list of conservation areas and information about the process for carrying out any other types of works within a conservation area, visit the planning department pages for more details.

Can I carry out works on a tree within a conservation area?

Yes - but there are two things that you have to check first:

1. Check that the tree is not protected by a tree preservation order (TPO).

2. Check the size of the tree - if the tree has reached a certain size you must give six weeks notice to Southwark's Planning Department before you start any work. The specified size of the tree is different depending on whether the tree is standing alone or is part of a group of trees.

  • Trees standing alone - measure the diameter of the tree at 1.5 metres above the ground. If the diameter is 7.5 centimetres or more you must give six weeks notice to Southwark's Planning Department of your intention to carry out works.
  • Trees standing within a group of trees - measure the diameter of the tree at 1.5 metres above the ground. If the diameter is 10 centimetres or more, you must give six weeks notice to Southwark's Planning Department of your intention to carry out works.

What should I do if I want to carry out work on a tree in a conservation area?

Please complete the application for tree works form, to notify the Council of your proposal to carry out work to a tree in a Conservation Area.

How will I know if I can carry out works on the tree?

If Southwark's Planning Department object to your proposed works, we will write to tell you that we intend to serve a tree preservation order.  We will also write to you to inform you if we have no objections.
