Tree surgeons

If you're thinking about having work done on a tree in your garden, it's wise to get expert advice. You should also check out the pages about Tree Preservation Orders and Conservation Areas to make sure you are acting legally.

The Arboricultural Association website has a list of approved contractors that covers the whole of the UK. The contractors are examined for safe working practices and technical competence consistent with British Standard 3998. Contractors should have satisfactory third party liability insurance and professional indemnity insurance. Before entering into a contractual agreement, you should insist on seeing a current receipt in respect of insurance premium.

The work undertaken by the approved contractors includes:

  • Maintenance advice
  • Planting
  • Tree pruning
  • Cable bracing
  • Pest and disease control
  • Felling of trees in difficult positions

Tips for selecting a contractor

  1. When making an appointment with an Approved contractor, inform them if you require advice regarding trees or if you already have a specification and need an estimated or fixed cost quotation.
  2. Consider obtaining more than one quotation or estimate. This will allow you to compare prices and choose the right company for your particular job. Remember that price may not be the governing factor.
  3. Estimates or quotations will normally be provided free of charge for your specific requirements, but you should be aware that there may be a fee charged if advisory work is involved
  4. When asking for an estimate or quotation, indicate when you would like the work to be carried out. The contractor will be able to advise you if this is going to be practical.
  5. Do not leave it too long before accepting an estimate or quotation. If possible, let the contractor know your decision within 7 to 10 days, and make clear the terms of acceptance.
