Nunhead Cemetery

Nunhead Cemetery is one of Southwark's hidden treasures. It is one of the seven Victorian cemeteries in London. It has many magnificent monuments in memory of the most important people of the day as well as smaller headstones, which mark common or public burials.

Nunhead Cemetery's history, architecture and stunning views make it a fascinating and beautiful place to visit. While much of the cemetery is mysterious and overgrown, many of its features have recently been restored to their former glory. This is thanks to support from the Friends of Nunhead Cemetery funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Southwark Council.

Facilities

• Nature reserve: Part of the cemetery is now a nature reserve supporting a diverse range of both native and exotic plants. It's also a haven for wildlife, 16 species of butterfly have been found within the cemetery.
  
• Guided tours: The Friends of Nunhead Cemetery (FONC) run tours of the cemetery, on the last Sunday of every month. Tours start at 2.15pm from the Linden Grove gates. For more information go to the FONC website.

Opening hours

1 April to 3 October: Daily 8.30am to 7pm.
4 October to 31 October: Daily 8.30am to 5pm.
1 November to 28 February: Daily 8.30am to 4pm
1 March to 31 March: Daily 8.30am to 5pm

Location and transport

Park entrances: Linden Grove and Limesford Road.
Car and bike parking: Some car parking is available near the entrances.
Bike parking: Cycle racks are available at the Linden Grove and Limesford Road entrances.
Rail: Nunhead Station.
Buses: 78, 343, 484, P12 will take you to the cemetery.

Burials and graves

The cemetery is nearly full and burials now carried out are in family plots.

Contact Nunhead Cemetery 020 7732 9535 with the square number and the grave number. Staff will locate the grave if possible and call you back. Some areas of the cemetery are no longer safe to access.

History of the park

Nunhead Cemetery opened in 1840 and is the second largest Victorian cemetery in London. It was reopened in May 2001 after an extensive restoration project funded by Southwark Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund. Fifty memorials were restored along with the beautiful Anglican Chapel, designed by Thomas Little.
