Summer Activities for children - Inspired by Roald Dahl

This summer a giant peach will be landing in Grove Vale Library, so come and join us on a Fantabulous journey of craft, storytelling and scrumdiddlyumptious tales.

  • Happy Roald Dahl Day Let’s launch The Big Friendly Read by making a decorative bunting and a big friendly giant. Kick off the Summer Reading Challenge and borrow a book by Roald Dahl. Saturday 16 July, 10.30am to 12pm
  • Puppets and Crafts Fun Make puppets of the Fantastic Mr Fox and the Enormous Crocodile. Children can also create masks of other popular characters. Tuesday 19 July, 3.30pm to 5pm
  • Peaches and Rainbows Join in with our Grove Vale Library colourthon. Choose to colour a giant peach or a giant rainbow. Finished artwork will be displayed in the library. Saturday 23 July, 10.30am to 12pm
  • Mr Twit’s Decorative Beard What can we find in Mr Twit’s beard? Make the beard, decorate it and dress up as Mr Twit. Borrow and read The Twits for the Summer Reading Challenge. Tuesday 26 July, 3.30pm to 5pm
  • Revolting Rhymes Have a go at writing a revolting rhyme and making a book cover to go with it. Saturday 30 July, 10.30am to 12pm
  • We Love Matilda Make a magic finger and change the world. Tuesday 2 August, 3.30pm to 5pm Centipedes and Cloud Men Make a creepy crawly centipede or a fluffy ‘cloud person’ to hang in the sky. Saturday 6 August, 10.30am to 12pm
  • Impressive Inventions Create recipes for delicious sweets just like the ‘Candy Man’ would. Devise concoctions for marvellous medicines and think of a name for your remedy. Write a shape poem in a medicine bottle or sweet wrapper. Tuesday 9 August, 3.30pm to 5pm
  • The Big Friendly Readathon Roald Dahl books are great fun to read aloud so we’re going to read books together in a readathon. Everyone will read a part of the book and pass it along to the next person. Children of all ages can join in and parents are also welcome. Let’s see how big our readathon can be. Tuesday 16 August, 3.30pm to 5pm
  • Magic Fingers and Friends The Grasshopper, Ladybird, Spider, Glowworm, Centipede and Earthworm all live inside the Giant Peach and become best of friends with James. Make creature finger puppets and give James a helping hand. Saturday 20 August, 10.30am to 12pm
  • Creepy Crafts Create your own newts and lizards and creepy crawlies. Inspired by the newt prank in Roald Dahl’s book Matilda. Tuesday 23 August, 3.30pm to 5pm
  • The Peach Has Landed James and the Giant Peach have landed. Make a mini Empire State Building and stick a peach on top. Tuesday 30 August, 3.30pm to 5pm

Toddler Takeover!

If you're looking for events and activities for under fives then Grove Vale Library is the place to be! There's an under fives activity every day that the library is open - all of them free with no need to book in advance. The weekly timetable looks like this:

  • Baby rhyme time every Monday 2.15pm to 2.45pm
  • Baby rhyme time every Tuesday 2.15pm to 2.45pm
  • Baby rhyme time every Thursday 2.15pm to 2.45pm
  • Baby and toddler session every Friday 10.30am to 12pm
  • Family drop-in with stories and activities every Saturday 10.30am to 11.30am

And with lots of brand new picture books and board books to borrow, Grove Vale Library is an essential destination for under fives and their parents and carers!   

Children: weekly and monthly activities

  • Baby Rhyme Time, every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 2.15pm to 2.45pm
  • Baby and toddler sessions run every Friday 10.30am to 12pm
  • Chatterbooks children's book group, 2nd Saturday of every month, 2pm to 3pm. For children 8 to 12 years
  • Stories and Crafts Fun Afternoon, every Saturday 2.30pm to 3.30pm
  • Family drop-in with stories and activities every Saturday 10.30am to 11.30am
  • Homework Help for Children, every Monday 4pm to 6pm, during term time only

Adults: weekly and monthly activities

  • Grove Vale book group for adults, usually fourth Tuesday of every month, 7pm to 8.15pm. Please contact Gundula Wegener for more information and to find out the next book to be read and discussed
  • Free computer classes and learning in libraries

There is wheelchair access to the library. There is no toilet and no dedicated parking.
