Keeping Warm and Well in Southwark
Southwark has won funding from the department of health to support older people during the cold weather.
Arrangements have been made with partner voluntary sector organisations to send specially trained befrienders to identified older people. The befrienders will give information and advice about how to reduce fuel costs, stay warm and keep well.
Where there is a need, the handyperson's service may be sent out to instal simple measures, like draught exclusion, chimney ballons and clearing lofts for insulation.
Emergency action in extreme weather
In the event of extreme weather, the befrienders will also do emergency shopping for essentials and odd-jobs so that older people don't have to go out in the snow.
The council may also provide safe heaters, which can be delivered if its absolutely necessary.
