What does the democracy commission do?

For its first task the democracy commission looked at council assembly.

This is a public meeting, seven times a year, of all 63 elected councillors sitting on the council, and is chaired by the Mayor of Southwark. Traditionally these meetings have taken place at Southwark Town Hall but from July 2011 they will also happen at locations across the borough. This is a direct result of the democracy commission's work and it's all about finding better ways to involve residents in debates and decision making.

Throughout the summer of 2010 the democracy commission held events and met with Southwark residents, both in person and online. Its members listened to what you said to ensure your views were heard and responded to.

The commission has now made recommendations on improving Council Assembly based on the feedback we received. We are now working on how to implement the recommendations.

The next meeting of the Democracy Commission will be on Wednesday 3 August 2011 at Southwark Town Hall, Peckham Road, London SE5 8UB, at 7pm.
