Primary school admissions

If your child was born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, your child is due to start primary school in September 2012. By law a child is not required to start full time school until the term after their fifth birthday (compulsory school age). However, all children will be given the opportunity to start primary school in the September following their fourth birthday.

If your child is offered a place at the school before they are of compulsory school age you can request that:
  • Your child attends part time until s/he reaches compulsory school age or
  • That their entry be deferred until later in the same school year

If you do decide to defer your child's entry, the school place offered will not be given to any other child. However, you will not be able to defer your child's entry to primary school beyond the beginning of the term after your child's fifth birthday, nor beyond the academic year for which the original application was accepted.

Temporary classes in Southwark primary schools 2012

Southwark Council have experienced an increase in demand for places. This growth is forecast to continue and will require an increase to the number of reception places provided in Southwark's primary schools. In order to ensure that there are sufficient reception places in September 2012 the following schools have agreed to provide additional places:

  • Albion, Bellenden, Bessemer Grange and Ivydale will all take an additional 30 reception pupils
  • Charles Dickens, Grange, and Robert Browning will each take an additional 15 reception pupils
