How can I reduce waste?

Every year in Southwark we produce about 114,000 tonnes of household waste, which is equivalent to more around 0.8 of a tonne per household. We are making great developments in recycling, however, according to the waste hierarchy below, the best thing you can do is not produce waste in the first place!

Waste prevention is about focusing on prevention, so it can be defined by any actions that reduce or stop waste being created, such as reuse, repair and refurbishment.

Waste prevention saves:

  • energy
  • valuable resources
  • money, as it reduces the need for waste collection, treatment and disposal
