About eight million disposable nappies are thrown away in the UK every day, equivalent to the weight of more than 190 London buses.
Each child uses between 4,000 and 6,000 disposable nappies.
Disposable nappies make up nearly three per cent of all household waste in Southwark.
Once a disposable nappy is thrown away, it may take up to 500 years to break down in a landfill site.

What can I do?

You can significantly reduce the amount of household waste you produce by switching to real, cloth nappies. They're easier to use than you think and there are lots of added benefits

They can save you up to £500 per child.
They are mostly made from natural fabrics that are kinder to your child's skin.
There are lots of great styles, colours and sizes to choose.
You can help reduce your household waste by about half.

Real nappies in Southwark

Southwark Council has signed up to the Real Nappies for London campaign. Through the scheme, Southwark parents and parents-to-be can claim a free £40 voucher to help get started with real nappies. The voucher can be put towards purchasing your own real nappies, which can be washed at home, or you can use the voucher when joining a nappy laundry service.

Claim your discount

You can claim your £40 discount voucher by completing an application form on the Real Nappies for London website or requesting a form via the helpline 020 7324 4709.

To take advantage of the discount voucher, parents must be able to provide copies of evidence of

Identity.
Residency.
Pregnancy or birth.
