Types of governor
Governing bodies normally have between nine and 20 governors. The Department for Education specifies the number of governors in each category.
Categories of governors
- Parents, who are elected by other parents at the school
- Community governors, representing the wider community
- Governors appointed by the local authority
- Staff governors, who are elected by their colleagues in school. Headteachers usually choose to be governors themselves and a place is always reserved for them
- You can also become a link governor for an area in which you have a particular interest. For example numeracy, music or special educational needs
Some governing bodies also welcome sponsors and/or associate members who are able to help take the school forward.
Types of school
- Community schools are the most frequent type
- Church schools
- Schools for children and young people with more demanding needs
- Academies
- Technology colleges
- Schools that specialise in specific areas, e.g. sports, business, performing arts
If you wish to be a governor at a particular school, or type of school, we will try to arrange that.
