Becoming a governor

Southwark needs governors from different backgrounds and cultures

The children in Southwark schools come from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures and the mix of school governors should reflect this. We need governors to come forward from all sectors of the community, from all cultures and ethnic origins.

Who can become a school governor?

No special qualifications are required, but you must be 18 or over on the date when you are elected or appointed. Enthusiasm, commitment and an interest in education are the most important qualities. You don't need to have a child at the school.

Many schools would particularly welcome new governors who have transferable skills developed at work, or who have a particularly good understanding of the community served by the school.

Ask yourself these questions

• Are you comfortable asking questions, contributing ideas, speaking up and working as a member of a team?
• Would you have time to visit and get to know your school, go to meetings and support school events?

If the answer is yes, then you could get a great deal back in return and make a real difference to Southwark children.

What's involved?

Governing bodies make many of their decisions based on the advice of committees that deal with specific issues, such as the school's curriculum, premises or finances. If you become a governor, you will probably be asked to serve on a committee where you have an interest or can make a contribution.

The amount of time involved for each governor varies between schools. However, on average you can expect to spend six to eight hours on your duties a month.

How to apply

If you are interested in becoming a parent governor, you should apply directly to the school your child attends.

To become a local authority school governor, please check your eligibility and complete the application form.

If you don't live or work in Southwark, please apply through the School Governors' One-Stop Shop.
