Elephant and Castle leisure facility

Southwark Council entered into a regeneration agreement with Lend Lease, paving the way for the £1.5bn regeneration of the Elephant and Castle. In June 2011, our cabinet agreed to enter into an additional agreement to transfer 0.9 acres of the existing leisure centre to Lend Lease to build a residential development adjacent to the leisure centre site. The residential development will provide commercial space for shops, cafés and the new 30- 40 story building will bring life to this part of the Elephant and Castle.

In November 2011 the cabinet gave approval to progress with the design of a new leisure facility. The new centre will dramatically improve the accessibility of health and sports facilities, as well as delivering one of the council's key regeneration objectives. Consultation previously carried out has formed an outline design, which will provide facilities such as:

• Six lane 25m swimming pool
• Learner pool
• Four (badminton) court sports halls
• Gym and spin studio
• Two exercise class and dance studios
• Crèche and a café.

Leisure centre charges will not increase as a result of this redevelopment and we are committed to providing an excellent service that is accessible to everyone.

Leisure centre consultation

Public consultation has now begun and members of the public are invited to attend the events, to view and comment on the outline designs for the new Elephant and Castle centre and the supporting residential development.

The event will be held at Elephant and Castle Leisure Centre, 22 Elephant and Castle, London SE1 6SQ on:

• Saturday 14 January, 10am to 5pm
• Monday 16 January, 10am to 5pm
• Tuesday 17 January, 11am to 8pm

Spring 2012 - Planned submission of planning application for both leisure centre and residential schemes.

Summer 2012 - Closure and commencement of demolition; construction of existing leisure centre

Spring 2014 - Completion and opening of new E&C leisure centre.
