Street Genii Programme

Young people in a meeting for work experience

Work experience for youths in Bankside

An exciting new work experience programme part funded by the section 106 agreement for Bankside Mix previously known as Bankside 123 and delivered by Better Bankside has given local youths the opportunity to work with a variety of different companies located in Bankside Mix.

This programme consists of two strands

  • A schools project, which will give young people from local primary and secondary schools in Bankside the opportunity to undertake one day visits to selected Bankside businesses within a particular industry sector
  • The Street Genii project which employed two young people to project manage and deliver a creative work experience project for a group of young people in the Bankside area.

The schools project

Groups of young people from local primary schools and secondary schools in Bankside will undertake a one day visit to selected Bankside businesses within different industry sectors. These sectors will include

  • Building design and construction
  • Leisure and hospitality
  • Magazine and online publishing

Their focus will be on giving children initial exposure to a world they may never ordinarily have access to in businesses located near their homes, and giving them some insight to the types of job opportunities in the area.

Street Genii project

This project was delivered over the summer months, and recruited two young people between the ages of 16 to 19.  They became "Street Genii" and were tasked with project managing a wrap party event for Street Genii who had completed their placements in 19 various cultural industries across both Lambeth and Southwark.

The Street Genii worked with young people from local estates and youth groups including Mint Street, Blackfriars Settlement and SE1 United, to host the wrap party held at Tate Modern. The young people involved, worked with a number of local companies such as IPC Media, Vinopolis and Better Bankside to gain the range of skills, such as events and, finance management and catering, required in order to set up and run a successful wrap party
