Tate to tube

Great Suffolk Street light tunnel

Tate to tube

Southwark Council commissioned artist Ron Haselden to look at the series of tunnels on Great Suffolk Street and strengthen the wayfinding between the Tate Modern and Southwark tube station.

The lighting design forms part of Haselden's Gil Sans series but was further developed for the Tate tube route. He reinforces the route cues of the orange lamp posts using LED lighting. The work directs visitors through the Great Suffolk Street tunnel between Tate Modern and Southwark tube.

The Tate tube project was completed in 2007 and also introduced subtle blue lighting to the two bridges either side of Haselden's stunning piece. The project is part of the Light at the End of the Tunnel programme and compliments his art in the arches work also commissioned by Southwark.
