Potters Fields Park

Potters Fields Park after refurbishment

Potters Fields Park

Potters Fields Park has been transformed

Southwark Council has worked with developers More London and regeneration agency the Pool of London Partnership to create a world class park along the Thames and adjacent to Tower Bridge and City Hall.

The council worked with partners to commission internationally renowned Gross Max landscape architects, designers of public space projects such as The Bullring in Birmingham, to complete the design.

Funding for the project was secured via a section 106 planning agreement between Southwark Council and More London, and a grant from the Pool of London partnership. The £3m refurbishment project took 12 months to complete on site.

What has been included in the redesign?

  • Transplanting of existing trees and planting of 39 new trees
  • Installation of a huge delft patterned bench in memory of the old pottery industries in the area
  • Installation of new delft patterned entrance screens at Tooley Street
  • Construction of giant granite step seats which will afford wide views of the river and London icons
  • Planting of seasonal herbaceous beds by world famous Piet Oudolf, of Battery Park, New York fame
  • Two new refreshment kiosks, completed summer 2007

Nick Stanton, leader of Southwark Council said: "Southwark Council is proud to be principal funder of the redevelopment of Potters Fields. This is another important milestone in the regeneration of Southwark. The improvements recognise the importance of this central London site but has been driven at every stage by local people. This is one of a number of major projects being undertaken by the council across the borough, transforming it into a place that people can be proud to live and work."

The project has been an excellent example of how the public and private sector can work together to deliver regeneration projects in the public spaces between buildings. This project is one part of a wider chain of improvements to the public spaces around More London and City Hall.
