St Thomas Street public realm upgrade

St Thomas Street public realm upgrade

As part of the regeneration of London Bridge and the construction of the Shard, one of the projects being developed to improve the area is an upgrade of St Thomas Street. Access to London Bridge Station, local connectivity and quality public realm are key drivers of the scheme.

We have appointed a design team and developed a draft design to improve the St Thomas Street streetscape between Stainer Street and Borough High Street. The design seeks to achieve the following objectives:

  • To create a better connection between the station, the hospital and the university to the South
  • To promote safe and easy access for pedestrians and cyclists in the area by improving crossings and movement around St Thomas Street
  • To improve the look and feel of St Thomas Street by investing in high quality paving materials and introducing street trees where possible

The proposals include the pedestrianisation of Joiner Street - the short section of highway which runs between St Thomas Street and London Bridge station. Access for emergency vehicles will be retained through use of a controlled rising bollard.

Tell us what you think

To further explore opportunities for the scheme, we want to hear your views on the proposed design for St Thomas Street :

We look forward to hearing your comments on the draft proposals over the next four weeks to 1 July 2011. Please contact Dan at Southwark Council on 020 7525 5450, or by email: dan.taylor@southwark.gov.uk.

Wider investment in London Bridge

The £2.2m enhancement to St Thomas Street is in addition to an estimated £25m investment in a new bus station, train station concourse, and underground connection. The council is working closely with Sellar Properties as the developers of the Shard, Kings College, Guys Hospital and Transport for London to deliver the project.
