Bermondsey Street Bridge

Bermondsey Street Bridge

Bermondsey Street Bridge

Southwark Council has worked closely with developers More London to secure £500,000 of investment to carry out an intensive refurbishment of the Bermondsey Street bridge or "tunnel" which connects Bermondsey Village with Tooley Street.

The funding forms part of the section 106 or planning gain agreement between the council and developer, More London, and represents a significant investment in a project will benefit large numbers of residents and workers in the area.

Works have commenced on site to complete the following works

  • Brickwork cleaning throughout the bridge
  • Cleaning and painting of the steeldeck within the bridge and at the northern end
  • Replacement of the existing drainage system and the installation of a pigeon protection system
  • Installation of a new pedestrian friendly lighting scheme with white light throughout
  • Installation of some feature lighting at the northern mouth of the bridge similar to the recently installed lights along Crucifix Lane, Druid Street.

It should be noted that the works do not include footway or carriageway replacement works within the bridge which are under the control of Transport for London. This project forms part of the wider Light at the End of the Tunnel regeneration project which is well underway to refurbishing 90 bridges stretching from Bermondsey to Vauxhall.

The project is being delivered by the regeneration department at Southwark Council, and builds upon recently completed projects in the local area at Crucifix Lane, Roper Lane, Tanner Street, and Whites Grounds.

Next steps

Works commenced on site in December 2008 and we have now cleaned the bricks on the eastern and western side of the tunnel, leaving the area of bridge over the centre of the road. Night-working was initiated in March to complete this section without needing to close the road during the day. Unfortunately the works were too loud and we received complaints from residents and works had to be aborted.

Works will recommence on site in June 2009 during a road closure as part of the Thames Water mains replacement programme. Once Thames Water have replaced the water main, our contractors FM Conway will follow behind to clean the rest of the tunnel. If this should not eventuate for any reason, we have designed a solution to deliver night-working with a noise barrier at the southern mouth of the tunnel - we hope to avoid doing this to save on project budget, but have this option should the Thames Water programme be substantially delayed.

The tunnel cleaning works should be completed by the end of July, after which time our lighting engineers will begin replacing the light fittings within the tunnel, and erect a new colourful feature lighting system on the northern facade of the bridge.

All works are estimated to complete September 2009.
